One-of-a-kind cast glass sculpture by Wisconsin artist Wes Hunting. This piece is stunning – please look at all photos.

“This body of work is a culmination of the last four decades I’ve spent in search of my artistic vision using glass as my principal material. I spent years studying traditional glassmaking techniques, such as murrine and Zanfirico. In this time, I have refined and stylized these processes into new and unique imagery. The way I use them would be considered, to many, unconventional. This new work takes this knowledge and incorporates it into cast glass. Working in cast glass allows me to add depth to my designs in a way that I never imagined. I am able to incorporate light and shadow into the conception of each piece, as if they were additional colors of the palette. This, along with their sheer size and scale, makes this my most elaborate and bold series to date.” – Wes Hunting

Wes Hunting has been working with glass for over thirty years. He is known for his incredible skill with murrini as well as remarkably intricate, abstract patterns drawn on hot glass.
The vibrant colors and patterns are “drawn” onto the glass surface at temperatures exceeding 2000 degrees. Hunting combines various Italian techniques, such as zanfirico, with decorative techniques that he has personally developed and refined. While the forms of his work have changed over the years, they have always remained simple, with the intention that they never distract from the increasing complexities of the surface decoration.

Wes Hunting always had an interest in art, but it wasn’t until working at a historical village in college that he first tried glassblowing. After graduating from Kent State University in 1976, he studied glass at Penland School of Crafts and worked as an assistant to glass artist Richard Ritter for six months. He later traveled to Italy to take in the glass scene in Venice and Murano. Today, he works as a team with his son, Wesley, in his home studio in rural Wisconsin.

“Working in glass allows me to orchestrate a symphony of light and color. ” – Wes Hunting
