741 – King’s Canyon, CA – 360 View
Built from twenty-four individually enamel-painted layers of glass, fused under heat into a single solid mass and ground along its edge, King’s Canyon reveals its structure the way the earth reveals its own: in section. Each sheet becomes a stratum, and the cumulative effect of grinding through them is a topographic reading of the canyon- contoured lines rendered not on paper but suspended in three inches of solid glass, each one a discrete elevation captured in a discrete pour of color.
Cool slate blues and sage greens trace the King River and the canyon floor cutting through the pieces, patient and eroded, while golds, ambers and reds climb like canyon walls lit by late-day sun. The contour lines interlock in sharp, faulted boundaries – visual evidence of the same tension that carved the real canyon over millions of years, compressed here into a few square inches of glass.
Because the color lives inside the material rather than on its surface, the piece carries a depth no photograph can fully hold. Move a few inches to either side and the strata seem to separate, each layer sliding relative to the next, the whole canyon appearing to shift and breathe. The result fuses a record of process – the visible plane of each fused layer – with a record of place, so that the making of the object and the landscape it evokes become quite literally the same layered structure.
King’s Canyon, CA is a deep river canyon in Northern California. It features a vertical drop of 8,200 feet (from the peak of Spanish Peak down to the confluence of the Middle and South Forks of the King’s River), making it almost 1/2 mile deeper than the Grand Canyon.
