Gorgeous blown glass.
Bengt Hokanson received a B.A. in Anthropology from Tulane University in 1991, while simultaneously studying glassblowing. From 1990 – 1993 he worked as a gaffer from Gene Koss, Head of the Glass Department at Tulane University. Between 1991 – 2002 he studied at many sessions at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA. Bengt has also studied at The Studio at Corning in Corning, NY and at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, NY.
Trefny Dix received a B.F.A. in Sculpture from Indiana University Bloomington in 1993. She learned glass casting while working at Studio Inferno in New Orleans, LA. She has also spent a considerable amount of time at Pilchuck and The Studio at Corning.
The duo opened their first glass studio in 1996 in Greenport, NY. In 2000, they began a collaborative body of blown glass vessels. The work experimented with the use of bright colors and abstract, textural patterns on sculptural glass forms. In 2013 they relocated to Bengt’s childhood home in East Hampton, where they are deeply inspired by the beautiful maritime landscape that surrounds them on Long Island, NY.
“We think of our blown glass vessels as sculptures. The murrini patterns and color washes in our work are used to emphasize every aspect of the sculptural forms. The curves are wrapped with color; tall forms are latticed with surface murrinis and clear windows are splashed with abstract murrini patterns. The glass’s transparency, its rich color and its ability to become any form, are all at play in our work. We use a combination of Italian, Swedish, and experimental techniques to create our glass forms. Modern painting and sculpture, world textiles, urban graffiti, natural landscapes, seascapes and marine life forms have all been inspirations for our work. We try to capture in our glass the color, the noise, the shape, the feel of our abstract world.”
